What’s the Difference Between Sports Betting and Gambling?

Both betting and gambling have been exciting forms of amusement for generations of people. But what is the actual difference between these two types of games?

If you’re interested in getting into betting or gambling or just want to find out how it all works, the information below may be useful to you.

The main difference

By definition, gambling is an activity of betting something of value (money or other) that a certain outcome will take place. This outcome is always entirely determined by chance.

That means that people who gamble put their money as a stake that something will happen during an event they’re observing, and participants can’t predict the outcome. A classic example of gambling is roulette. Players put their stakes on the numbers of a wheel. There is no way of predicting the number that the roulette ball will land on. Chance alone determines the outcome.

On the other hand, betting is a form of gambling in which the event that the players are betting on has a projected outcome. A classic example is betting on a sports game. There is usually a team or a player that is a projected favorite, and the odds are in its/their favor. A player can bet on the projected winner and win less money or bet against the projected winner and win more money. Players can also bet on different outcomes within a sports event (for example, the number of free kicks or total players injured) that have a projected chance of occurring.

The amount that the player wins is always connected to the amount of risk that the player takes.

How do we determine the winning amount in betting/gambling?

The calculation of how much the player will win relative to their stake is called a quota.

Quotas in gambling are determined by statistical chances that something may or may not happen. For example, a roulette wheel has 37 slots, which means that you have a 1/37 chance of winning if you put your stakes on one number. If you succeed, you will win what you have invested x37. The quota in this instance was the number 37. Since every number has an equal chance of being the winning one, statistical chances determine the quota in gambling.

On the other hand, in betting, the two parties of the bet define quotas. For example, in a soccer game between Liverpool and Brighton, we can safely assume that Liverpool is a projected favorite. Therefore, the bookie (which is one of two parties, if you are betting at a registered bookie and not against a friend) will probably put a small quota on Liverpool and a bigger quota on Brighton.

Nowadays, all the best sports betting sites that you can use have specialized algorithms that determine the chances of almost anything happening. Still, you can always play against the odds if you have the right information or a good ‘hunch’.

Which is a bigger risk – betting or gambling?

Generally speaking, gambling is a bigger risk.

Gambling doesn’t involve any analysis whatsoever, except basic knowledge of statistics. Also, if you’re gambling, you’re mostly playing against Lady Luck, and virtually no one can predict whether you’re going to win or not, which makes gambling riskier.

Betting, however, includes serious analysis, knowledge of the sports (or other events players are betting on), and factors that may influence the outcome of the event.

Bettors are usually more in control than gamblers. If they play smart and are well informed, they can predict the outcome, at least to some degree.

Which should you choose – betting or gambling?

Both betting and gambling offer excitement and fun, but there are certain differences.

Gambling is purely about the rush and the earnings. People who gamble like the excitement of winning and the surge of hormones that occurs when they score. That makes gambling thrilling but also highly addictive. Gambling games like roulette and slot machines usually have very simple mechanics that players can repeat over and over again, constantly getting more stimulation. That is why getting addicted to gambling is always a risk for the players, and that is something that you should keep in mind.

While betting provides the same kind of rush, it isn’t only about the excitement and the winnings. Bettors are usually big sports fans; they like analyzing, gathering info, and planning their next bet. Of course, that takes a lot more time than just hitting a button on a slot machine, so it is somewhat less addictive, although every form of gambling carries the risk of getting addicted.

To summarize, if you just want to make the night more exciting and get ‘the juices flowing’, gambling is a great way to feel that rush. On the other hand, if you love watching sports events and just want to add a little ‘extra spice’ to it, betting is the way to go.

The takeaway

Both activities rely on stakes and chance, but they do have certain differences that distinguish the players that prefer one or the other.

Even though they are based on similar principles, gambling always involves putting your stakes on a neutral event that is controlled only by chance, while betting involves putting stakes on an event that implies other factors as well.

If you’re interested in either one, you should consider what you’re looking for in these activities, and keep in mind that, while extremely fun, they can be too appealing for some.
