5 Manchester United Worst Defeats in History

Manchester United is one of history’s biggest and most successful football clubs. It’s no wonder why they are very popular today. However, their record is far from clean. They had some of the worst losses and upsets in football history, and today, we will talk about them. Here are some of the worst losses that Manchester United has experienced over the years.

Man Utd vs. Everton, 0-3

In 1992, when the Premier League had just started, Man Utd suffered one of its most embarrassing defeats against Everton in Old Trafford. On the opening day, Man Utd suffered an initial defeat against Sheffield. However, the nightmare wasn’t over, as later on, Everton completely outclassed them.

The Merseysiders ran all over their hosts as Robert Warzycha, Peter Beardsley, and Mo Johnston left the game with each of their own goals against Man Utd. It was an embarrassing defeat, especially for the hosts during that time.

Man Utd vs. Tottenham Hotspur, 1-4

United may have suffered a New Year’s hangover on this one, as Tottenham severely outplayed them. With three of the usual United back four injured, and with Scholes and Schmeichel picked even while suffering a calf injury, the Hotspurs sensed a weakness in the opposing team, which they took advantage of greatly.

This resulted in two goals from Chris Armstrong, one from Teddy Sherighman and another from Sol Campbell. Man Utd didn’t take those unanswered, though, as they at least had one goal from Andy Cole. But of course, that wasn’t enough against four goals from Tottenham. It was quite a huge upset during that time. If you play online blackjack real money, you must know how happy Tottenham bettors are during that day and how much money they made.

Man Utd vs. Southampton 1-3

This is probably one of the most embarrassing defeats of Man Utd, not because of the beatdown they received from Southampton but the excuse they gave to football fans. Man Utd found themselves 3-0 in the second half.

However, Ken Monkou, Neil Shipperley, and Matt Le Tissier had gone out of their dressing room with another color for their stripes, which were blue and white. It worked to a degree, as Ryan Gigs had a late goal for Man Utd. The reason for the change? “The players don’t like the gray strip,” said Ferguson. “They find it difficult to pick each other out. We had to change the strip.”

However, it was too little too late, as they were already down three goals when they made the change. Man Utd fans will always cringe at the reasoning behind the change to this day. This makes you wonder why you didn’t just start with the blue and white stripes at the beginning of the game.

Man Utd vs. Newcastle, 0-5

This one is huge, or at least the number of unanswered goals are huge. Before they returned to Dell, United headed to the other side of the country and Newcastle to play against their team in 1996. According to fans, what started to be an easy win was an absolute beatdown, which Newcastle gave.

With goals from Darren Peacock, Les Ferdinand, David Ginola, Alan Shearer, and Philippe Albert, Man Utd was down to 5 goals, which became unanswered as the match finished. Man Utd fans were stunned as it was a huge upset by Newcastle. It’s still being discussed today, and it seems the Magpies won’t ever live that down.

Man Utd vs. Southampton, 3-6

Yep, this is another beatdown by Southampton; just six days after their Newcastle defeat and six months after changing the shirt fiasco, Man Utd suffered another loss from Southampton. Fans hoped it would be different this time, but they were wrong.

Eyal Berkovic gave the Saints a starting lead before Roy Keane was sent off with two bookable offenses in under 20 minutes after the game. Le Tissier then chipped Schmeichel before Beckham and Ostenstad swapped goals, making the game 1-3 just before halftime.

However, after halftime, David May brought back their ten men, making the game 3-2. However, this was before Berkovic struck again, along with Ostenstad grabbing either side of the goal, making the game 3-6.

Final Words

Manchester United is, without a doubt, one of the world’s biggest and most successful football clubs right now. However, that doesn’t mean that their track record is spotless. Man Utd has suffered embarrassing and humiliating defeats since its inception, and who’s to say that they won’t suffer any more in the future?

But even so, it doesn’t mean that they are a bad team. They are one of the greatest in football history, and throughout the years, they have proven that time and time again. Nowadays, they are still playing at a high level and are still working hard to show the world that they deserve to be in the top spot in football history.
