PONTEFRACT went into the game looking to jump into third place in order to gain a home advantage in the playoffs, whilst visitors Aycliffe were hoping for a top six finish themselves.
Connor Smythe scored Pontefract’s first goal in the 22nd minute as his cross found the top corner.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men after 36 minutes as Danny Burns was sent off in an incident which saw Aycliffe keeper James Winter injured and centre half Dale Elgie taking over the gloves.
