John Askey appointed Truro boss

Truro City have confirmed John Askey as their new manager.

The 59-year-old replaces Paul Wotton, who left for Torquay United last month.

It is Askey’s seventh job in management. The former forward had two spells at Macclesfield Town, where he made his name as a player as the club’s record appearance holder. He increased his legendary status by winning promotion from the National League with the Silkmen in 2018.

Since then he’s taken charge of Shrewsbury Town, Port Vale, York City (who he guided to promotion) and Hartlepool United, where he was dismissed in December 2023.

The Stoke-on-Trent-born boss will oversee Truro’s return to Cornwall. Having sold Treyew Road in early 2021, they’ve shared with Plymouth Parkway and latterly Gloucester City. The new 3,000-capacity venue in Langarth will be ready for the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

Askey is looking forward to the new start with the National League South side, telling the club’s official website:

“It is exciting times although it will be a challenge, but I am looking forward to the project ahead.

“We are hoping that everyone in Cornwall can get behind us and we can be successful. That is what it is all about, turning this club into a successful one.

“(Truro) have done well over the past couple of years but we want to push on now and keep improving.”

He will be assisted by Truro’s all-time leading goalscorer Stewart Yetton, who fulfilled a similar role in previous campaigns.
