WHAT a difference a year makes.
Just over 12 months ago, Adama Sidibeh had just completed his first season in the North West Counties League following spells at AFC Blackpool and Cheadle Heath Nomads.
Now, the 25-year-old striker has scored for his country in a World Cup qualifier – and has set his sights on playing on the biggest stage.
Sidibeh was on target on his international debut for Gambia in a 5-1 Group F victory over Seychelles at the Stade Municipal de Berkane last weekend.
It completed a remarkable rise to the top for Sidibeh, who only moved to the UK two years ago and soon made his mark when scoring 20 goals in just half a season for Cheadle Heath, earning a move to Northern Premier League side Warrington Rylands.
Sixteen goals in 30 games for Rylands ensured he attracted plenty of interest and Sidibeh was soon back on the move, joining Scottish Premiership club St Johnstone on the final day of the January transfer window.
He then chipped in with three goals in as many games at the end of last season to preserve Saints’ top-flight status.
“It’s a dream for every player to play for their country,” Sidibeh said after his call-up. “I am really glad to get the opportunity.
“I am really proud and my family are too. They were really happy for me when I told them.”
