Altrincham overcame Sutton by a solitary goal to leapfrog their visitors and go back into the play-offs.
The defining moment of the game came in the tenth minute when Alty’s leading marksman, Regan Linney – who else? – latched on to a long ball over the Sutton defence before drawing goalkeeper Jack Sims and rifling home his 15th goal of the campaign.
In truth, the game lacked any pattern or rhythm throughout and neither side were helped by the awarding of 28 evenly-spread free-kicks for fouls.
