LEGENDARY local folk hero Hereward the Wake returned to his home town after more than 960 YEARS to rouse support for his namesake team Bourne Town – The Wakes – in their FA Trophy first qualifying round game against AFC Rushden & Diamonds. It was 958 years since Hereward, son of Leofric of Bourne, returned from exile in France in 1067, a year after the Norman Conquest, to stir up a five-year rebellion against England’s oppressive new overlords.
