BASINGSTOKE secured a key victory over Berkhamsted with a goal in each half, scored by Steven Sylla and George Reid.
Berkhamsted had the better of the opening exchanges as James Gurteen twice spurned presentable chances from set-pieces, but Josh Dolling went close to a debut goal at the other end with an effort deflected narrowly wide.
The hosts hit the front midway through the first half as Liam Ferdinand, Reid and Dolling combined in a move that found Sylla to lash into the corner from the edge of the box.
