■ CRAIG Spooner’s goal after 15 minutes gave Ashington the win in this North East derby. However, Matthew Alexander will also take the praise as he saved a penalty late on to secure the victory.
The goal came when Ashington did well to get the ball out to the wide left before the cross to the back post was guided home by the left side foot of Spooner.
Bishop could have levelled up shortly afterwards as Dale Hopson’s free-kick hit the side netting. That was the best chance for the host in the first half.
