Oli Bainbridge punches the air after adding number four for South Shields

South Shields chairman Geoff Thompson has revealed the club is in advanced talks with an unnamed international investment group as part of a proposed new ownership structure.

The National League North outfit has been embroiled in a promotion push this season, currently battling against AFC Fylde with just one point separating the title rivals with six games to go.

However, in the midst of their ambitions on the pitch, Thompson has shed light on developments off it.

The local businessman has overseen the club’s rise since taking charge in 2015 following a community-led takeover.

Exciting news

Speaking in a video released to shareholders and via the club’s social media on Monday, he said: “I’m excited to share with you some exciting news about the impending changes of the ownership structure at South Shields Football Club.

“This follows several months of discussions and negotiations with an international investment group.

“The deal is subject to final sign off from the National League – but we do not expect any problems in that regard, and therefore, I am taking this early opportunity to at least give you some information about the deal and the proposed timetable.”

Completion date

He added: “So, the intention is that this new ownership structure will take effect from the 16th April.

“That’s our target completion date, subject again to National League approval – but what I must stress is that I am going to continue as chairman of the club and as a significant minority shareholder in the club and I will continue to work with the existing management team and continue to drive the club forward in the way we have over last ten or eleven years.

“So there are some exciting developments for the club. I hope you’re all as enthusiastic as I am hearing this news.

“Obviously, I need to share with you some more detail in due course, once we have reached that completion date.

“Thank you for your attention. I know it’s a brief communication at this stage, and as I say, I hope you’re as excited as I am about what the future holds for the club.”

The Mariners won 3-0 at the weekend against Alfreton Town and face a trip to Spennymoor Town on Good Friday, playing after Fylde have a chance to extend their grip on top spot against Marine this Tuesday night.
