Al was like a second Dad – Baker

PASSING: Alan Taylor

Former Slough Town co-boss Neil Baker has described his former manager Alan Taylor as “one of the best people on the planet” and like a “second Dad” to him.

Taylor, a legendary boss of both Farnborough Town and Bracknell Town, as well as Aylesbury United, passed away this week after a long illness at the age of 73.

In all, Taylor spent 13 years at Farnborough, joining as Ted Pearce’s assistant manager from Fulham’s coaching staff in 1986 before taking over as Boro boss in April 1993.

In his first season in charge, he led the club to promotion from the Southern League Premier back into Non-League’s top-flight before leaving in 1999.

Two years later, he begun a six-year stint at Bracknell, also leading them to promotion in his first season in charge.

Baker played for Taylor as a young defender at Farnborough, alongside his late Dad Keith.

Paying tribute, he said: “One of the best people on the planet. And like a second Dad. Was certainly my favourite manager I played for. Learnt so much from him. RIP Al.”

Baker’s defensive partner at Farnborough was Jon Underwood – the pair going on to become joint managers of Godalming, Slough and Beaconsfield.

“Such sad news,” Underwood said on X. “Alan gave me my chance at Farnborough, the signed me at Aylesbury and Bracknell, then gave me my first opportunity in management.

“I owe him so much and learned a huge amount from him. Above all, a great human being. My thoughts go out to [son] Gav and the family.”

Bracknell said in a statement: “Alan’s contribution went far beyond results. He gave six years of commitment and passion to our football club and created memories and relationships that remain part of Bracknell Town’s history today.”
