From the Eighth Tier and Priced Like It: Where the Value Hides in the FA Cup First Round’s Biggest Mismatches

Top

Somewhere between Marston Road and Flamingo Park, a bookmaker has decided what the magic of the Cup is worth. Usually, they’re not far wrong.

The stakes are real. Win a first round proper tie and the FA hands over £47,750. Lose and it’s still £15,800. At Step 3 or 4, that’s a season’s budget. The bookmakers’ prices barely notice it.

Forty ties run from Friday 6 to Monday 9 November, with seven non-league clubs live on TNT Sports. Most of the long-odds underdogs are priced about right. A few aren’t. And one tie looks priced backwards.

The widest gaps on the board

Rushden are a fan-owned Step 4 club who knocked out Morecambe to get here, and Billy Sharp hasn’t ruled out a romantic comeback. Stafford have already seen off Hereford, Halesowen and Gateshead, the last of them 5-0 in a replay.

The question isn’t whether the gap is big. It’s whether the price respects the gap or just the badge.

What history says the gap is worth

A Vertize Sports analysis of every FA Cup tie from 1996/97 to 2025/26 found that the lower-ranked club won 29.5% of mismatched first round ties.

The wider the gap, the lower the strike rate. Three tiers apart, the underdog won 16.1% of the time. At four tiers it was 13.3%, and at five, 9.7%.

Turn those into prices and 13.3% works out at roughly 13/2, and 9.7% at roughly 9/1. So if Stafford or Cray are bigger than about 13/2 to go through, or Rushden bigger than 9/1, the price is generous against history. If they’re shorter, it isn’t.

Only 19 ties in that period were won by a club four or more tiers below their opponents, with Kettering’s win over Northampton in 2024/25 the most recent famous one. But one in eight isn’t a fairytale. It’s a price.

No replays, so read the market you’re actually backing

Replays have gone from the proper rounds, so a draw now means extra time and penalties on the day. That matters more than people think.

A “match result” bet settles after 90 minutes. A “to qualify” bet includes extra time and penalties. For an underdog, hanging on for a draw after 90 minutes is often the realistic route, and the draw can be the better-value price of the two.

Stafford needed a replay to beat Gateshead. From here, there are no second chances.

Do your homework on the league side

Non-league fans know their own club inside out. The edge is knowing the opposition: their form, and whether the manager sees the Cup as a nuisance.

Grimsby are 11th in League Two and Burton 12th in League One, both comfortably mid-table. Colchester, who host Worcester City, are 21st in League Two. Crawley, away at Wimborne Town on Sunday (3 pm, TNT Sports 1), are bottom of League Two with six points from 11 games.

Before you take a price on the minnow, spend five minutes on the league side’s last few games, because team news and a weekend of rotation move these prices more than history does. Matchday Report runs previews and match reports across League One and League Two if you want the quick version.

Long odds aren’t no odds. Ask racing

Racing punters live with big prices in a way football punters rarely do. A 50/1 shot isn’t a joke if the price is bigger than its chance. Ten Bob Tony went off 50/1 in the Queen Anne Stakes on the opening day of Royal Ascot in June, and if you want the full story of that shock, Royal Ascot Races has the Royal meeting covered race by race.

Football long shots are rarely that big. With three outcomes and the draw squeezing the prices, an eighth-tier side at home tends to sit around [PRICE RANGE], not 50/1. The value is smaller, but so is the miracle you need.

The tie that’s priced backwards

Then there’s Boreham Wood v Wigan Athletic on Saturday. Luke Garrard’s side are unbeaten at the top of the National League after seven straight wins, and their title price has collapsed from 8/1 to odds-on. Wigan are bottom of League One with seven points from 12 games.

Wood are [PRICE] and Wigan [PRICE] ([date], [bookmaker]) at Meadow Park, so the “giant” is the one being asked to cause the upset.

Keep an eye on Altrincham v Notts County (Sat 7 Nov, 5.30 pm, TNT Sports 1 and BBC Two), with County 19th in League One. Oxford City v Leicester opens the round on Friday night (7.45 pm, TNT Sports 1) on an artificial pitch. Mansfield v Macclesfield should give anyone who remembers January’s win over Crystal Palace a twitch. In the closest ties, the value is often in the draw or the favourite, not the romance.

Pick the maths, not the shirt

For a Step 4 club, the real prize on the first weekend of November is that £47,750, not the bookmaker’s return.
