Stand Out Players of Euro 2020 Group Stage

The Euros are well and truly underway and what an exciting group stage it was. There were exciting moments, special goals, and a few upsets along the way to the knockout stage. Soccer fans have seen their teams take the field three times already, which provides a good understanding of what these teams are capable of.

Italy have been extremely impressive since kicking off the tournament on the opening day. Although once a massive force in international soccer, it had appeared as if the golden age of the Italians was well and truly over. However, they have proven that they are a major threat to anyone challenging for the trophy. Belgium and The Netherlands are the only other teams that were impressive enough to get a 100% record in the tournament so far. Other favourites, such as England, France, and Spain, all also went unbeaten in the group stage.  But what players in particular have impressed on the big stage? Out of the opening games, we’ve had some expected masterclasses from top players. But there are also a few lesser-known players making the most of their opportunity.

Manuel Locatelli

The undefeated Italy haven’t even conceded a goal in the championships yet. A huge part of this success has been their top-quality midfield. The standout player is perhaps Manuel Locatelli. He scored a brace in Italy’s 3-0 win over Turkey, including a fantastic long-range strike. The midfielder is currently playing his club soccer at Sassuolo, but could be in for a big money move after the Euros. Reports say that Juventus are interested in signing the 23 year old.

Alexander Isak

If you regularly watch La Liga, chances are you knew about this man prior to the tournament. It may be odd to say Isak is one of the stand out players. He is a centre forward yet to find the back of the net. However, he has given Sweden an attacking prowess that they have lacked since the retirement of Zlatlan Ibrahimovic. He managed 17 goals in 30 La Liga appearances, so he is certainly capable of scoring goals. Real Sociedad is his current club, although the 21-year-old could bag himself a big move this summer.

Denzel Dumfries

PSV Eindhoven may find it difficult to hold on to their 25 year old right back following the conclusion of the tournament. His attacking talents have been a major factor in the Dutch team’s success. With goals against Ukraine and Austria, he is truly a versatile player for any team to include in their squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Many people doubted the sharpness of Cristiano Ronaldo heading into Euro 2020. However, he has proven the doubters wrong. He is the tournament’s top scorer with five goals in three games. The Portuguese captain played a crucial part in his country qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition. Although 36 years old, Ronaldo is still capable of finding the back of the net, as well as creating opportunities for his fellow Portuguese attackers.
