Who Will Win the AL East After One Month of Games

The American League East is arguably the toughest division in baseball with four teams that can be in the postseason. Today, we are going to dive into the odds for each team and discuss if it is a smart wager to make. All odds listed are the consensus odds so depending on which sportsbook you use, the odds can be a little different.

New York Yankees (+115)

The New York Yankees are considered to be the favorite to win the AL East and it makes sense. They are currently three games up in the division with an 18-7 record and already played seven games against Toronto, six games against Baltimore, and three games against Boston. Those games are in the bank so they cannot be made up.

The Yankees have been built on pitching the last few years and have been doing incredibly well as they have a +49 run differential. The bullpen has been on fire as they are tied for the MLB lead with a 2.30 bullpen ERA and teams are hitting just .204 against them. The offense has also clicked as they are second in MLB (first in the AL) with a .747 OPS behind both Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo hitting nine homers thus far. All in all, place the wager here as they are likely to win 100+ games and win this division.

Toronto Blue Jays (+130)

The Toronto Blue Jays lost a lot of big pieces and tried to replace them in the offseason but added guys like Kevin Gausman, Yusei Kikuchi, and Matt Chapman to make the difference. The Jays have a deep starting pitching depth as they can arguably be the best starting rotation in the division with Jose Berrios, Alek Manoah, and Kevin Gausman at the top of the order.

They are currently third in the division with a 16-11 record with a -8 run differential but have also played some very tough competition. They faced the Yankees seven times and the Red Sox six times so they have some of those games done already and in the rear view mirror. The offense is scoring 3.78 runs per game sofar and have some stars with guys like Chapman and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. They have a chance to do some damage here but might fall short as this team does not have many players that have played important games together.

Tampa Bay Rays (+455)

The Tampa Bay Rays are currently second in the AL East with a 15-10 record and have a +8 run differential and have only faced the Orioles and Red Sox three games apiece in the division so they have a lot of action remaining. They also are in the midst of their West Coast trip so that is a big advantage to get out of the way early.

Tampa’s pitching staf has done well and they rely heavily on their bullpen options as they have 8.1 innings more than any other team out of them. They have a 2.80 bullpen ERA as well, so they are extremely effective. They are also utilizing their speed as they are second in baseball with 19 stolen bases and have been caught five times so far this year. With young guys like shortstop Wander Franco leading the way in the order, this should be a scary team that has shown the ability to win. They feel like they have taken a step back in the division this offseason with the trade giving up Austin Meadows right before the season started so it will be interesting to see how they look. Tampa feels like a team to keep on the radar and see as the season continues to go on before placing a wager on them but the odds are definitely juicy right now at +455 so I wouldn’t be shocked if you jump on them as a value based on history.
