What Does It Take to Win the FA Cup?

The Football Association Challenge Cup or the FA Cup is a sports tournament watched by millions of people. It is a football competition for men and women with a number of leading English clubs taking part in knockout stages to qualify for the finals. Do you know what it takes to win the FA Cup? You might be surprised by the effort that the football clubs put into lifting the FA Cup trophy. 

What is the FA Cup?

Established in 1871, the FA Cup is the oldest national football tournament in the world. There are 12 rounds organized in various orders before letting the top football clubs enter the semi-finals of the FA Cup. It can take anywhere from 6 to 14 wins in matches to qualify for the semi-finals and finals of the competition. 

Non-League teams are football clubs that are not associated with any of the top leagues in the country. These football clubs regularly compete in the FA Cup to give English Premier League clubs a challenge during the season. Teams from the English Football League Championship are major participants in the FA Cup. Winners of the FA Cup directly qualify for the UEFA Europa League. 

Manchester City are the Current Champions of the FA Cup

The finals of the 2023 FA Cup was held at the Wembley Stadium in London. Manchester City took on their rivals Manchester United in a grueling match to decide the winners of the tournament. More than 80,000 attended the match to cheer for both the teams competing in the finals. Manchester United were defeated by Manchester City in a 2-1 victory. 

It was the 7th FA Cup title win for Manchester City. The midfielder, İlkay Gündoğan, took the lead for Manchester City in the match by scoring the first goal within 12 seconds. It was the fastest goal conceived in the history of FA Cup finals. Manchester City made their 21st appearance in the FA Cup finals during the match. A few of the football clubs that Manchester City won against in the FA Cup before the finals match includes Chelsea, Arsenal, Bristol City, Burnley, and Sheffield United. 

The first half of the 2023 FA Cup finals had the crowd roaring with excitement. İlkay Gündoğan used his right foot to hit the ball into the nets. He took the shot from right outside the penalty area to score the first goal of the match. The previous record for the fastest goal in a FA Cup finals was held by Louis Saha for the English Premier League club, Everton in 2009. It took 25 seconds for Louis Saha to get the ball past the goalkeeper. İlkay Gündoğan placed the first goal of the match in half the time it took Louis Saha to score in a FA Cup finals match. 

Kevin De Bruyne, the midfield for Manchester City, pushed through the defenses of Manchester United with a free kick in the first half. His teammates, Rodri and Erling Haaland, also had a good chance to score goals for Manchester City but missed on both occasions. It took over 33 minutes for Manchester United to level with Manchester City with a goal from the club’s captain, Bruno Fernandes. Manchester United almost doubled their score with a shot from centre-back Raphaël Varane that went over the goal post. 

lkay Gündoğan managed to give Manchester City a lead over Manchester United with a second goal at 51 minutes. David de Gea, the goalkeeper of Manchester United could not keep the ball from hitting the nets after lkay Gündoğan smashed the ball with his left foot. Star footballers like Stefan Ortega and Bernardo Silva played a key role in helping Manchester City win the FA Cup finals for their team. 

Arsenal has Won the Most FA Cups

The English Premier League club Arsenal has won the FA Cup a record 14 times in the past. Arsenal won their last FA Cup in 2020 against Chelsea. The finals match took place in London and the television broadcast had 8.2 million viewers. In a 2-1 victory, Arsenal beat Chelsea by performing better than their rivals on the football field. The strike from Arsenal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, won the Man of the Match award for his terrific goal at 28 minutes. He took a penalty that landed behind the nets to give Arsenal a chance to equalize Chelsea in the first half of the game. 

Christian Pulisic had placed a goal early in the match for Chelsea at 5 minutes. After taking the lead in the 2020 FA Cup finals, the captain of Chelsea, César Azpilicueta, fouled Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The referee called for a penalty that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was able to convert into a goal. In the second half of the match, Nicolas Pépé passed the ball to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a second goal in the 67th minute. Chelsea defender, Kurt Zouma, could not stop Arsenal from scoring despite being ahead of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. 

Arsenal has appeared in 21 FA Cup finals. Arsène Wenger, the manager of Arsenal, is the most successful coach of the tournament. He was also responsible for Arsenal winning the English Premier League title 3 times. An active manager like Arsène Wenger can be tremendously helpful towards winning FA Cup titles.
