League pondered a top-five proposal

IN his superb article on the National League play-off final (NLP, June 5), Chris Dunlavy says that in the days before two-up two-down the National League once considered a two-team play-off between the teams finishing first and second.
In fact, the proposal was for the play-offs to include all the top five.
The first-place team would have had a bye to the final where they would have met the winner of a knockout tournament between the teams finishing second to fifth.
This would certainly have stimulated the season, and does not seem so outrageous when you consider how Rugby League...
