UNDER PRESSURE: A referees’ job is now tougher

JOHN Wilkins (NLP, Oct 30) is quite right to suggest that recent law changes have made refereeing more difficult.
The interpretation of handball is a good example. It used to be a relatively simple question of whether, in the opinion of the referee, the ball hitting the hand or arm was a deliberate action on the part of the player or an accident.
Under the present law, the referee now has to take a much more complex range of factors into account.
