FUNDRAISER: James Walker is a much-loved figure at Roots Hall

THE Shrimpers Trust may have a few pressing issues to deal with right now – but they can still rally round in support of former fans’ favourite James Walker.

In amongst current crisis talks to secure the club’s long-term future, the Southend United supporter group are also staging a benefit match for the 35-year-old who has battled a series of health issues since suffering a cardiac arrest in 2019.

A Trust XI will take on Farke Knight Rises FC on Sunday May 28 at Bower & Pitsea’s Len Salmon Stadium with all funds raised going to James’ mum, Dawn to aid with additional rehabilitation support.

Walker played for the Shrimpers between 2008- 2010 and made 45 league appearances across both a loan and permanent spell. He is part of the SUE-PA – an association for ex-Southend players – where he was a special guest for the club at a game in November 2018, five months before his life-changing cardiac arrest.

Former players such as Steve Tilson, Adam Barrett and Lee Barnard have all confirmed their attendance – and they are in the process of contacting a number of former players to turn out.

Walker’s former teammate Damian Scannell – the ex-Eastleigh, Sutton and Dulwich winger – will also be arranging an event alongside the match.

Walker too will be there to watch from the sidelines with a statement reading: “James’s family intend to bring him to the match and be by his side to kick the game off. It is sure to be an emotional moment.”

Supporters can support the event by purchasing a ticket which have been priced at £5 for adults and £2 for under-16s, alternatively they can donate to the campaign.
