‘Proud’ Darts legend Bonner retires

DARTFORD legend Tom Bonner says he calls time on his playing career a proud man after announcing his retirement.

The 35-year-old centreback has spent ten years at the National League South Darts over two spells having joined from Hinckley United in 2010.

Part of their Conference South promotion, he also won the play-offs with Cambridge United before spells with Dover Athletic and Ebbsfleet United ahead of a Dartford return in 2016.

Bonner said: “Ten seasons at Dartford, captaining the club for over six years and making over 450 starts is something I’m incredibly proud of. Thank you for all the memories.

“This has by far been the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make but the time is right for me to have a new focus in my life. Thank you to all the clubs, managers and team-mates I’ve had the privilege of playing with and working for. The memories, lessons learnt and times I’ve had will stay with me forever.

“Most of all I want to thank my family for always being there through the good times and bad.

“I’m excited for the next chapter in my life but I know nothing will come close to the feeling of playing in front of you fans. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and I can hold my head high. Just know I gave it everything for you.”

Bonner began his career with Northampton Town and scored the playoff final winner for Bedford Town to win promotion to Conference South in 2007 while on loan.

He is now setting up a new business, meaning it’s time to hang the boots up – even with boss Alan Dowson pleading for another year.

Dowson said: “He told me before the season ended he wanted to retire and I’ve tried for months to change his mind! But he’s got to look after himself and I respect that.”
