True reflection is in the actual gap

WHEN the media refer to the gap between Football League and Non-League teams they get it very wrong.
For example, the much-referred 117 league places gap between Charlton Athletic and Cray Valley PM does not reflect the pyramid structure. The actual gap is much, much bigger.
Between Charlton and Cray Valley there are 13 teams in Step 3, 24 in Step 4, 24 in Step 5, 48 in Step 6, 88 in Step 7 and 72 in Step 8 (8 divisions x 9 places in each).
So, this means that there are in fact no less than 269 places between Charlton Athletic and Cray Valley PM.
