MAIDENHEAD UNITED have sold centre-back Devante McKain to League Two leaders Gillingham for an undisclosed fee.
The defender, who is a product of the Magpies youth set up, put pen-to-paper on a permanent deal with the Gills on Tuesday and his former boss Johnson Hippolyte says he feels the youngster will thrive at Priestfield.
Speaking to the Maidenhead Advertiser, Hippolyte said: “It’s great for Devante and it’s great for the club.
“He’s come through the ranks quickly. He’s played for the youth team, the reserves and the first team.
“It makes me very proud. From day one we were all adamant he would play professional football. It was a no brainer, that’s how much ability he has.
“I honestly believe with a bit of luck, he could be playing in the Championship in a season or two.”
Magpies chairman Peter Griffin commented: “We’re delighted for Devante.
“This sends a clear message to young players at our club. You are being watched.
“This proves you can do it. All it comes down to is hard work and desire.”
