THE BOOMTOWN Rats were Number One in the UK music charts and Seb Coe had just set a new record for running the mile. But the big news of 1979 – certainly in Non-League football – was the formation of the new Alliance Premier Football League.
Today marks the exact date the new division kicked off with Bangor City edging out AP Leamington in a 3-2 thriller, a scoreline by which Boston United also beat Bath City.
Altrincham – who would go on to be crowned inaugural champions and retain the title a year later – shared a 0-0 draw with Weymouth.
