■ THE Silkmen narrowly defeated Northern Premier League side Prescot Cables with an Ethan McLeod goal.
Despite early pressure from Cables, including a Peter Clarke header, forcing Max Dearnley into a smart stop, they were unable to provide much more of a threat.
The Silkmen asserted their authority, eventually making the difference seven minutes from time through substitute McLeod, who found the far corner on his return from injury with a neat, low strike across the face of Calvin Hare’s goal.
