RANGERS took the honours at the end of this eight-goal thriller with their Staffordshire neighbours.
The hosts raced into a 2-0 lead after half an hour with goals from Kyle Perry, scoring against his former club, and summer recruit Dan Westwood.
Vale reduced the arrears when Harry Benns found the net with a stunning 40-yard free-kick.
The League Two outfit had sent a young side to Marston Road with their first team out in Spain. But they still managed to level the scores on 56 minutes through Lucas Green-Birch after he broke through on goal.
