■ TOM Meechan’s header from some penalty box pinball proved to be the difference as Merthyr got the better of Farnborough in a scrappy encounter.
The August sun may have shone brightly but the fare on the park was far from august; lacking both quality and invention from either side.
Merthyr’s game plan of surrounding Farnborough’s Michael Fernandes with four players proved marginally more effective than Farnborough’s plan of getting the ball to Fernandes, but this was thrown into total disarray when he was sent off with 20 minutes left.
