HAVE WE BECOME TOO BIG IN NAME?

IT PRECEDES the name of this paper and has become shorthand for semi-professional football in England.
But is the term ‘Non-League’ out of date?
The Chesterfield manager Martin Allen suggested as much to me in my interview with him for this paper last month. He reckoned it was to denigrate a thriving part of the game and made supporters and players of relegated clubs see it as – in fans’ parlance – tinpot.
