Are clubs audited?

DO leagues perform any financial reviews of clubs at the start of the season, ie: review budgets or figures for the season past?
If so how do so many clubs have financial difficulties mid-season?
Revenues such as commercial/sponsorship, gate, social etc must be quite consistent year by year with the big swing factor being benefactor contribution. When the latter changes during the season then clearly there are problems.
How many clubs survive on the benefactor model and how many live within their means?
Maybe Non-League finances are deliberately shrouded in mystery.
