But that was only for Joe Brothwell to level in first-half injury time. Substitute Rackeem Reid grabbed the 70th minute winner.
Lowly Oadby Town pulled off a shock by winning 3-2 at second-placed Deeping Rangers thanks to a late goal from Sam Burton.
Benjamin Osei and Lamar Parkes had earlier been on target for the visitors.
