IT WAS a case of what might have been for National League North underdogs Gateshead as they somehow failed to find the net against League One visitors Charlton Athletic.
The Tynesiders created and spurned good chances in both halves and were made to pay when the Addicks scored in each half to progress to the third round.
Leading scorer Jayden Stockley scored both goals, bundling the ball home on the half hour and then deflecting Ben Purrington’s 54th-minute shot past Gateshead keeper Jacob Chapman.
