SOUTHEND UNITED put a turbulent summer to one side and gave their loyal fans something to celebrate – and proud boss Kevin Maher admits it left him feeling emotional.
Goals from Callum Powell, Oli Coker, Dan Mooney and Harry Cardwell fired the threadbare Shrimpers to a 4-0 opening win over fancied Oldham Athletic.
The Blues only got the green light to start the season from National League chiefs less than a fortnight ago after clearing their football creditors.
