Walsall Wood have confirmed that they have resigned from NPL Midlands with immediate effect.

Walsall Wood

By Mark Stillman

have confirmed their resignation from NPL Midlands with immediate effect.

The Step 4 side failed to fulfil their last three fixtures since a 6-0 defeat at on Saturday 12 October.

They were hit with a suspension on 26 October for ‘not complying with a league directive’ in a troubling few weeks for the club among financial uncertainty.

Chairman George Evangelou stepped down in late-August, with manager Ian Long departing at the start of this month claiming he and his players had not been paid.

Despite these setbacks, Wood were 11th in the division and their only defeats were after Long and most of the squad walked out.

The Northern Premier League released a statement:

“The league has been in regular dialogue and met with officials of the club in recent weeks to provide help and advice.

“However, the club has decided that it cannot sustain Step 4 .

“Their decision is accepted by the league with great sadness and best wishes for the future to officials, players, and fans alike.”

Walsall Wood’s record will be expunged with the league table set to be amended on Thursday 31 October.

The league will continue with 21 clubs.
