SOUTHEND’S first visit to Wembley came in somewhat unusual circumstances.
They played at headquarters because work was being carried out on Clapton Orient’s home ground. It wasn’t to be a trip to savour as the Blues went down 3-1 in the Third Division South clash in front of a paltry crowd of 1,916. Mickey Jones was on target for Southend, who finished a healthy fifth that season.
