The oldest football final to be played at its original venue returns for its annual Easter Monday showdown.

The Mexborough Montagu Cup – first competed for in 1896-97 – takes place at the Hampden Road ground, Mexborough, tomorrow with an 11am kick off.

Rotherham Sunday League leaders The Gate Inn take on Wickersley CC of the Blades Super Draw League for the right to lift the famous trophy in a final that has famously boasted an average attendance of more than 1,500 in recent seasons.

The duo have won through to the 2026 ‘Mont’ from 33 teams from various

Saturday and Sunday Leagues across south Yorkshire.

Entry is £4 for adults and £2 for concessions. Under 11s are admitted free with a paying adult.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the Mexborough Montagu Comforts Fund, a charity that supports patients at the local hospital, with £3,750 raised last season. For more details visit www.montagucup.com.
