Tommy Smith has described his World Cup call by New Zealand as the ‘icing on the cake’ of his career.
The 36-year-old defender will appear on the biggest stage of them all for the second time in a glittering 58-cap international career where he played every minute of the All Whites’ last campaign 16 years ago in South Africa.
In doing so, he becomes the first active Braintree Town player ever to feature in a World Cup – not bad for someone who spent much of the Essex club’s National League season sidelined by various injuries.
