Shrimpers mourn Walker

Southend United say they are “deeply saddened” by the death of former striker James Walker, at the age of 38.

Southend United say they are “deeply saddened” by the death of former striker James Walker, at the age of 38.

A product of Charlton Athletic’s academy, frontman Walker made 54 appearances for the Shrimpers between 2008 and 2010, scoring eight goals.

Walker suffered a cardiac arrest in 2019 whilst teaching a PE class, resulting in severe physical and mental impairments.

In May 2023, Southend’s former players’ association hosted a benefit match to help raise money for his recovery.

As well as representing the likes of Hartlepool United, Bristol Rovers, Leyton Orient, Notts County, Yeovil Town and Gillingham, Walker also played for England at youth level, featuring at the Under-17s Euros in 2004.

The Shrimpers held a minute’s applause in Walker’s memory ahead of yesterday’s National League fixture with AFC Fylde.

A Roots Hall statement read: “Southend United is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player James Walker at the age of 38.

“On Saturday we will be conducting a minute’s applause in his honour ahead of kick-off.”

Yeovil added: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Glover James Walker, aged 38. James made 13 appearances for the Glovers during his loan spell from Charlton Athletic, scoring three goals. Rest in peace, James.”

APPLAUSE: James Walker
