‘HUGBALL’ MATCH IS A NO-GO

BRITAIN’S oldest football match is the latest event to succumbed to the Covid pandemic.
With Derbyshire in Tier 4, the annual world-famous Royal Shrovetide Football match at Ashbourne which had been scheduled to take place on February 16 and 17, has been cancelled.
The game, also known as hugball, has been played in the town since the 17th Century and involves two teams, the Up’Ards’ and Down’Ards’ comprising of thousands of players, using landmarks at the entrances to two villages as goalposts.
