Midweek round up: Magpies ‘need to keep going’ – Williams

Midweek round

By Alex McMonnies

Luke Williams says table-toppers Notts County side ‘are in a good place but need to keep going’ after they thrashed Wealdstone 6-1 on the road.

The Magpies went in at half-time 4-0 up through league top scorer Macauley Longstaff – his 17th goal of the season – Matt Palmer and an Adam Chicksen brace.

Aaron Nemane and Geraldo Bajrami added to the scoreline early in the second period before Micah Obiero grabbed a consolation for the Stones on the hour.

“I was pleased with the aggressive nature of the press, from the very first minute, the lads pressed a team that are so good on the ball,” delighted boss Williams said.

“It was a really good performance but the players understand that it’s no good to play well for a few games and then not back it up, so we’re in a good place but we need to keep going.”

County’s win meant Wrexham were unable to leapfrog their title rivals despite a 3-1 comeback against FC Halifax Town at the Racecourse.

Co-chairman Rob McElhenney was in attendance to see former Wrexham striker Emmanuel Dieseruvwe fired the Shaymen ahead from the penalty spot on 12 minutes.

But the Red Dragons hit back in the second half with goals from Ben Tozer, Jordan Davies and Aaron Hayden maintaining their perfect home record this campaign.

Meanwhile, Chesterfield andBoreham Woodwere both frustrated in their promotion bids with 1-1 draws away at York City and Dagenham & Redbridgerespectively, while Solihull Moors moved up to third with a 2-0 win at Maidenhead United.

Surrey rivals Woking and Dorking Wanderers played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

Padraig Amond’s double for Woking either side of half-time turned the game on its head after Ryan Seager had given the Wands the lead from the spot six minutes in.

An own goal from Woking’s Rohan Ince restored parity and James McShane thought he’d won the game for the visitors with a goal on 74 minutes before new signing Rhys Browne earned a point for his side with his first Woking goal seven minutes from time.

There was more late drama at Hayes Lane as Barnet stunned high-flying Bromley with a late fightback.

Charles Clayden opened the scoring for the Ravens, only for Idris Kanu to equalise for Barnet with five minutes left before two stoppage-time strikes from Max Pritchard earned a 3-1 victory for Dean Brennan’s men to push them into the top ten.

Joe Nuttall took his goal tally to nine and rose to fifth in the league’s top scorer’s chart as Scunthorpe United climbed out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 win over Gateshead.

He struck twice from the penalty spot, sandwiching a Caolan Lavery strike, after Adam Campbell had put the Heed in front early on.

Southend United extended their unbeaten run in the league to seven games with a 3-0 demolition of Maidstone United at the Gallagher Stadium.

Caretaker manager Terry Brown made it two wins from two as Aldershot Town clinched a late 2-0 win at struggling Yeovil Town, while Altrincham and Eastleigh profited from 1-0 wins over Oldham Athletic and bottom-of-the-table Torquay United respectively.
