EFL-bound Tolaj

DEPARTING striker Lorent Tolaj has saluted all at Aldershot Town after landing a dream move into the EFL with Port Vale.

The 22-year-old scored 25 goals in all competitions for the Shots last term, vindicating his decision to move to the National League side.

The Swiss striker had originally joined Brighton’s academy from FC Sion in 2018, but never made a senior appearance for the Premier League side. He had loan spells with Cambridge United, Salford City and Dundee in his time with the Seagulls, but it was his permanent switch to the Shots on a free transfer last summer that kick-started his career.

He has now joined League Two Vale for an undisclosed fee which activated his release clause, penning a three-year deal.

“Thank you to the fans, the coaching staff and my teammates – it was an unforgettable season for me,” he told the Shots website. “I will now be an Aldershot fan and I wish the club all the best for the new season!”

Tolaj is relishing the chance to show what he can do in the EFL next term for Darren Moore’s Valiants.

“I’m feeling great, I’m excited to be here,” he told Vale’s YouTube channel. “Port Vale is such a big club and hopefully we can get promotion this year. As soon as I spoke with the gaffer, we had a good connection – I like the way he wants to play.”

While losing Tolaj will leave a big hole to fill, Shots boss Tommy Widdrington is delighted to have played a part in his development.

“We as a club should be proud that we’ve been a part of the journey for Lorent,” he said. “I believe there are so many young players out there just needing a chance or a platform, and Lorent should be an example to all lads who don’t get their break at higher levels that with the right application and environment you can bounce back!”

Moore added: “I am absolutely delighted Lorent has decided to commit his future to the club amidst strong interest from other clubs at this level and above.”
