Aldershot Town issued a strong statement on Wednesday to dismiss what they describe as “malicious” misinformation circulating on social media.

Rumours had begun to spread online suggesting the National League outfit were in financial trouble, prompting concern among supporters.

The club have now moved to address the situation directly, insisting the claims are entirely false and traceable to a single source.

The Shots say the allegations include claims of late payments to players, which the board has firmly refuted.

Damaging

In a statement released on Wednesday, the club said it had taken the unusual step of responding publicly in order to reassure supporters and protect the club’s reputation.

“It has been brought to the club’s notice that there is misinformation being spread on various social media outlets that the club has/is going into administration,” the statement read.

“The club can confirm that this is a complete fabrication which can be traced back to one original source on a national football forum who has for some time been trying to create damaging rumours about the club.

“This individual source has also suggested that players have not been receiving their salaries on time which is also completely untrue.”

Trolling

The board acknowledged the impact such speculation can have on fans, stressing their desire to draw a line under the issue and shift focus back to football matters.

“The club fully understands that reading such misinformation on social media will cause concern to supporters which is why we have taken this step to publicly refute and dismiss the claims as nothing more than malicious trolling.”

Aldershot added that the directors remain focused on supporting the first-team management and improving results on the pitch, and confirmed they will not be making any further statements on the matter.

“The directors are now and wish to remain fully focused on giving the manager whatever support he needs to ensure that Aldershot Town can move into a more positive position in the league.”
