Robbie Savage offered Peterborough United job as Forest Green Rovers confirm exit talks

Robbie Savage has received an offer to become the next Peterborough United manager, with Forest Green Rovers confirming talks are now underway over his exit.

Owner Dale Vince confirmed the development in a club statement on Tuesday, bringing clarity to the speculation surrounding Savage’s future.

As reported in Sunday’s The NLP, the 51-year-old had emerged as a contender for the gig at the League One outfit after Peterborough parted company with Luke Williams earlier this month, though he remained tight-lipped on the rumours.

Forest Green gave Savage permission to speak to the club on Monday, with confirmation that he would miss tonight’s National League clash with Wealdstone.

Personal reasons

“We have given Robbie Savage permission to speak to Peterborough,” Vince said.

“He wanted to leave the club for personal reasons, reasons which we understand and respect.

“He’s been offered the job, and we’re now in a negotiation with Peterborough on the terms.

“We wish Robbie the very best.”

Savage joined Forest Green from Macclesfield in 2025 and signed a four-year contract at The New Lawn.

He guided the Green Army into the National League play-offs during his first season in charge, only to suffer an extra-time defeat to Boreham Wood in the semi-final.

Disappointed

Savage’s absence means assistant manager Jonathan Gould, Jan Klukowski and Josh Bowen will take charge against Wealdstone, having worked together throughout pre-season and the opening stages of the campaign.

The players learned of the situation first thing on Monday morning.

Gould admitted there would be disappointment within the squad but insisted their focus had to remain on the job in hand.

“Players will be disappointed at this moment in time but we’ve just got to get on with what we’re doing as a group of people,” Gould said.

“We represent the football club at the end of the day and we also represent the last 15 months of what Robbie’s done and how well the club has progressed.”
