Ashvir Singh Johal has left Morecambe by mutual consent, with the Shrimps in the National League relegation zone.

The 30-year-old manager has endured a turbulent spell at the helm of the Lancashire club, winning just six of his 32 games in charge in all competitions.

The poor run leaves the Shrimps 23rd in the National League, with little hope of avoiding back-to-back relegations to the National League North as things stand following last season’s drop out of the Football League.

Johal took charge in August after the summer takeover by the Panjab Warriors consortium, becoming the youngest manager in the top five tiers of English football and the first Sikh to lead a professional English club.

Challenging period

However, his tenure lasted only five months, following the departure of Derek Adams.

A statement from the club confirmed: “Morecambe Football Club can confirm that the club and first team manager Ashvir Singh Johal have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect.

“Ashvir joined the Shrimps during a challenging period and has worked tirelessly alongside his staff to stabilise the squad, integrate new players, and represent the club with professionalism and integrity both on and off the pitch.

“The board would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Ashvir for his commitment, dedication, and the way he has conducted himself throughout his time. He leaves with our best wishes for the future.

Johal’s appointment initially sparked cautious optimism, with supporters hopeful the new owners could steady the ship.

But that sense of promise has quickly faded, as rising tensions between fans and the club have cast a shadow over Morecambe once more.

The club added: “Assistant manager, Lee Tomlin and first-team coach, Neil Wainwright will take joint charge of first-team affairs on an interim basis while the club undertakes the process of appointing a new manager.

“The process to appoint a new first team manager is underway. We will keep supporters informed as appropriate, and thank you, as always, for your continued backing of the team and the club.”

Next up for the Shrimps is a trip to Altrincham on Tuesday, looking to end a six-game winless run.
