What Has Changed at Wrexham Since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Bought the Club?

What Has

Despite being one of the oldest professional football clubs in the world, Wrexham FC are barely known by fans around the country. Times are changing now, though, as the recent purchase of the club by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has brought the spotlight down on the National League side.

The two actors formed the RR McReynolds Company LLC to buy Wrexham in 2020, and things have changed massively in a short space of time. These Hollywood names have quickly generated media attention to help boost the club’s fortunes.

High Profile Television Series

Before the takeover, making a high-profile television show about a club in the fifth tier of English football would have been unheard of. But with two massive actors behind it, the club suddenly became a serious prospect for a docuseries. Welcome to Wrexham gives viewers the inside scoop on the takeover and what’s changed at Wrexham over the last two years.

The documentary was released on FX and Hulu in the USA in August 2022 and came out on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland a day later. Spreading onto various platforms was a shrewd move, as it means the series has been able to reach a vast number of people. From being virtually unknown last year, Wrexham is now a hot talking point among football fans around the world. There’s a sense of excitement about the project, with people wondering how far Reynolds and McElhenney can take it.

Attempts to Increase Coverage

The series is likely to be the start of a vast amount of increased coverage of Wrexham in the years ahead. The club’s new owners will doubtlessly use their superior marketing knowledge to push the club to new fans, and this could be done by adding more ways to follow the games.

There’s also the chance that the actors will turn to a tried and tested franchise model that’s worked so well for films and television series in recent years. Narcos, for example, is one of the most-watched Netflix series in recent times thanks to the way the franchise spread out into other media.

There are various Narcos games to choose from on mobile, including Narcos: Cartel Wars & Strategy. There are also a couple available at MrQ Online Casino, including Narcos and Narcos Mexico. These feature characters and artwork from the show and have helped make more people aware of the series on Netflix.

The acting duo could go for a similar franchising model with Wrexham, and commission various games about it. After the takeover, Wrexham appeared in FIFA 22 in the Rest of the World section, suggesting that they could easily appear in more digital titles.

In the first season with Reynolds and McElhenney as owners, Wrexham narrowly missed out on promotion to League 2 via the play-offs. If the new owners can boost the club’s exposure and pump more money into it, there’s a good chance that they could get promoted in the years ahead and start climbing up the football ladder.
