THE Shaun Saunders era began with defeat as Hythe Town departed Whitehawk as deserved winners.
The contest spluttered in the opening half with chances few and far between.
Hythe who stormed into the lead through a cataclysmic defensive error when Hawks goalkeeper Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke was caught with the ball underneath his feet as Tom Walmsley pounced on his indecisiveness to ripple the netting.
