MATLOCK made a dream start to the season inspired by star man Jamie Jackson.
Jackson created three and scored the fourth as the Gladiators eased to victory.
City actually made the brighter start but failed to trouble goalkeeper Richard Walton.
Marcus Marshall shot narrowly wide as Matlock got on top, and when Jackson was felled in the penalty box on 30 minutes, player-assistant manager Shaun Harrad tucked his penalty under the goalkeeper Aiden Stone on the half-hour.
