FC UNITED of Manchester closed in on the play-off positions thanks to two second-half strikes by Ali Waddecar.
On a wet pitch the visitors had the best of the early exchanges with Brad Holmes crossing for Paul Ennis, whose shot was blocked.
At the other end Rangers were only denied by the woodwork on 19 minutes when Tom Tonks’ corner found Jake Charles, who headed on to the crossbar.
The Boro were starting to get a grip and United escaped a scramble as the ball flew around the box.
