■ JOHN McGrath scored nine minutes from time to earn Widnes all three points. Neither side particularly imposed themselves in the first half, but it did take a superb stop from Chris Thompson to ensure a goalless scoreline at the break as he pushed a powerful Jordan Barrow effort behind.
The game burst into life in the second period and Widnes opened the scoring after 54 minutes when Sam Turner’s sensational screamer nestled in the top corner.
