Ashton United wasted no time in replacing Michael Clegg as Steve Cunningham was announced as First Team Manager on Wednesday evening.
After Clegg's resignation was accepted on Monday following a poor run of results concluding with a 6-0 hammering off Hyde United, Cunningham joins up at Hurst Cross with a wealth of experience.
The 42-year-old joins off the back of a successful spell as Buxton manager which saw him win the 2021/22 Pitch in Northern Premier League as well as guiding them to the second round of last season's Emirates F.A. Cup where they was knocked out by League One side Morecambe.
In a club statement Ashton Co-Chairman Jonathan Sayer said: “We're delighted to appoint someone of Steve‘s calibre.
“Steve is a fantastic manager with a proven track record for winning in this league and above.
“We're looking forward to the rest of the season where we still believe there's lots to play for.”
With a tough game coming up next with a trip to Warrington Rylands, Ashton will need to get off to a quick start under the new manager if they're to turn this season around like their ambition shows with the new appointment.
Clegg, meanwhile, has been unveiled as chief scout at National League outfit Altrincham.
Speaking in a club statement on Wednesday, Alty football director Rob Esteva said: “We are delighted to welcome Michael to the club. He has an unparalleled eye for young talent in the area and has played a key role in the development of so many young players.
“We have closely followed his time at both Atherton Collieries and Ashton United, and it is clear his football philosophy is very closely matched to that of the management team here at Alty and how we operate.
“We know Michael will be a valuable asset to the club moving forward and we are all very much looking forward to working with him.”
