JAMES Askey’s heroic performance as a stand-in goalkeeper ultimately proved fruitless as Newcastle slipped to defeat to Macclesfield.
Home shot-stopper Joe Slinn was sent off after 30 minutes for handling outside the area, meaning Askey had to play the last hour in goal.
However, Newcastle defended heroically for the rest of the first half to keep it 0-0 at the interval. Macclesfield broke the deadlock soon after the interval, as Alex Curran finished off a sweeping break.
