RUNNERS-UP last season, Berkhamsted began with a win in a tight match.
The only goal came in the fourth minute when Ben Walster crossed and Tommy Smith headed back across goal from the far post to beat Dan Green.
The home side had several free-kicks in promising positions, but could not hit the target.
At the Canal End, Ryan Kinnane headed low by the post from a corner. Jonathan Lacey beat two and centred, but nobody could apply the finishing touch.
The visitors came into it more after the interval.
