MARGATEedged a tight game in difficult conditions with a 79th-minute winner courtesy of their super-sub Kane Haysman.
The away side started the better and both strikers Jordan Chieodozie and Jay May caused problems for Brightlingsea, but James Bradbrook produced two saves to deny Margate.
Regent settled into the game and got better as the first half went on.
But despite some good possession, they failed to really trouble former Chelsea goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley – capped by England at youth level.
